Tours and LPs for 2007 (14th December)

Next year is already shaping up to be a busy one with Kristin Hersh, Malcolm Middleton and Idlewild all announcing new LPs and Scottish dates for early 2007.

Kristin returns to Scotland for the first time since 50 Foot Wave played Glasgow in September 2004. The show at Glasgow, Oran Mor on Sunday 11th March. The Glasgow date is one of 9 in March in the UK (there's also a London date in January - sold out!) The tour is to promote the release of new LP 'Sing Like A Star' which is released by 4AD in the UK in January (Yep Roc in the US). The LP will be preceded by a single, 'In Shock'. Tickets available from Ticketmaster. More on Throwing Music here.

Meanwhile Malcolm Middleton is quickly back in action following the split of Arab Strap with the release of new LP 'A Brighter Beat' on 26th February 2007. The LP is preceded by the release of  the title track as a single on 22nd January. (The single is available to listen to on Malcolm's Myspace site) Both releases are on new record label, Full Time Hobby.

Middleton tours the UK with 8 dates from 17th-24th March culminating in a Glasgow show on 24th at the Classic Grand. Tickets available from 0870 400 0688 (24hrs) LiveNation.co.uk. More on malcolmmiddleton.co.uk .

Finally, Idlewild will be promoting new LP 'Make Another World' for which there doesn't appear to be an official release date on their website. They are playing quite a lot to coincide with the new LP though. First up is a date as part of Celtic Connections at the ABC on 23rd January where they will be supported by the wonderful De Rosa (tickets).

The following night 24th Roddy Woomble (solo & friends!?) will be supporting Kate Rusby at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow and then on the 30th Idlewild are taking part in another show at the RCH, Glasgow for their Poetry Project album 'Ballads Of The Book' which is coming out on Chemikal Underground) and is a various artists collaboration between Scotland's top writers, poets and musicians.

A full Idlewild UK tour in March takes in dates in Aberdeen Music Hall (Monday 19th) and Perth Concert Hall (Tuesday 20th).

Four Bands Call It A Day

It’s not been a good few weeks with 2 of my favourite bands calling it a day and a further two bands quitting just after I’d bought their LPs.

First up were Hope of the States a couple of weeks back. Certainly they’ve left a wealth of material (there must be a good couple of LPs worth of B-sides alone) but the big disappointment for me is the records that they might have made.

Even worse is the spilt of the Golden Virgins . The reasons given cite lethargy, alcoholism and a hatred of the record industry, which seem fair enough. ‘Songs of Praise’ was my favourite record of 2004 by a country mile but despite great reviews stiffed at the box office.

Quite why this should be the case will remain a mystery to me although you feel that the fact that they were wrong side of 30 wouldn’t have helped. I  suppose the writing was on the wall when they lost their deal before the keyboard player and the bass player's legendary Afro deserted the cause in quick succession.

There is a farewell gig in Sunderland on 27th October and I would like to be there.

The other 2 departures are Sleater-Kinney and Arab Strap, neither mentioned on here before. However I recently purchased their most recent LPs and they’re both excellent. Hopefully the next band whose most recent record I purchase will not split up ...

Throwing Muses Return

There have been one or two hints that TM weren't dead and the most concrete proof of that suspicion arrived in the TMO Newsletter in whcih Kristin announced not only 2 solo dates and 2 50 Foot Wave dates but the first Muses gig since 2003. The gig takes place on 5thAugust at NASA in Reykjavik, Iceland as part of the Innipukinn Festival plus a further handful in the US. Lucky people.
