The Delgados - Rothes Halls, Glenrothes
Saturday 12th February 2005

The Barras gig in October was skipped due to a comparatively hectic gig going autumn and the expectation that the Delgados would play somewhere closer to home. I expected that to mean Edinburgh not for them to turn up almost on my own doorstep. This turned out to be a good night with my enthusiasm for 'Universal Audio' rekindled.

Turn-out at Glenrothes was disappointingly small, in large part due to the fact that they had played both Edinburgh and Perth in recent days. But what was lacking in numbers was made up for, not just by the range of ages attending but  by the enthusiasm of those present. In fact the small crowd put the Edinburgh audience of a couple of years ago to shame.

In many ways this confirmed my view of the recent record - it's a fine record but it lacks the couple of outstanding songs to make it a great one. So there were no dips in quality at all from the opening chords of 'I Fought The Angels' to the end of  an astonishing encore of ''No Danger'. But  it was the older stuff, 'Hate', 'Arcane' and of course 'No Danger' which reached the greatest heights.

The only complaint would be that the likes of '13 Gliding Principles' and ' If This Is A Plan' just weren't quite replaced in the set.

Most of the highlights from the 'Universal Audio'  were present and correct although there was no 'Get Action!' nor one of my favourites, 'The City Consumes Us'. Still we had a fine upbeat set which illustrated why the Delgados remain one of Scotland's finest bands.

It remains a matter of some regret to me (and no doubt to the band's bank balances) that they haven't managed to attract a wider audience although their reliance on songwriting with no flashy gimmicks may well be their (commercial) downfall. Whatever.

The Delgados remain a f***ing great band whom we should treasure as long as they continue to grace us.
