dEUS - Edinburgh, Liquid Room (Friday 19th November)
After a false start in August, dEUS finally made it to Edinburgh with
effectively a new band in tow. It's difficult to believe that though given how
good this was. Sure the back catalogue is to die for, but the new songs came
over really well - plenty of variation in style from the gentler songs like
'Seven Days, Seven Weeks' and 'Only Love ...' through the funky "What We Talk
About" to the screaming rockers 'Sun Rah' and 'Cold Sun'. But, given that it was the first listen for those songs, it was the back catalogue which made this one. There were plenty of highlights - the reaction to 'Suds & Soda' was demented - an 8 foot high wall of moshers! The live version of 'If You Don't Get What You Want ' knocked the recorded version into a tin cup - both 'Fell Off The Floor' and 'Turnpike' were mighty, particularly the heavy finale to 'Turnpike' introduced since the version on the official website. In the end the only musical disappointment was the opening 'Instant Street' which seemed a bit drowned by the crowd's reaction and was truncated from the recorded version. Oh yeah, and most of us went to this gig twice so an extended encore would have been nice. But after discovering dEUS through their shortened T in the Park set in 1999, I'd waited a long time to see them live again and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Roll on the new LP and tour. |
